Thomas (Tom) Derwin Willoughby, 67, of Deltaville, Virginia, passed away on August 23, 2026.

He was born on October 6, 1958, in Baltimore, Maryland, to Franklin Cordell Willoughby and Cora Corina Lee Odham.

He was preceded in death by his father.

He is survived by his two daughters, Kimberly Ann Willoughby Cohen and her husband, Phil, of Seattle, Washington, and Amy Marie Willoughby of Waynesboro, Virginia; his mother, Corina Willoughby of Waynesboro; his siblings, Franklin Cordell Willoughby II and his wife, Marianne, of Carmel, Indiana, Corina Bliss Burner and her husband, Michael, of Elliston, Virginia, and Daniel Parker Willoughby and his wife, Sharon, of Lyndhurst, Virginia; as well as several nieces and nephews and two great-nephews.

Tom served in the United States Army from 1978 to 1982 and was honorably discharged. During his military service, he was stationed at Fort McClellan, Alabama, and served in Central America.

He later built a life closely tied to the water. He loved sailing the ocean and was an experienced seaman who earned his Merchant Marine license and became a licensed sailing instructor. His travels under sail took him from New York to Central America, where he lived briefly, and across the Atlantic Ocean.

In his work as a tugboat captain, Tom assisted with the removal of debris from the Twin Towers site in New York following the terrorist attacks of September 11. He worked 12-hour shifts during that time and qualified as a first responder for his efforts.

Tom loved his family very much. He also cared deeply for others, looked out for those less fortunate, and was willing to lend a hand when help was needed. He showed Christ-like love to others and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

A memorial service will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Waynesboro, Virginia, on September 18, 2026, at 11:00 a.m.
